Company Key lost?
We'll get it reissued.

Your company key is the access code your corporate registry issues so you can file annual returns, change directors, and update your registered office online. Lose it, never receive it, or inherit a corporation without it, and you’re locked out of your own filings. Incorporation Registry requests the reissue on your behalf — Federal Corporation Key, Ontario Company Key, BC Company Password, or Quebec clicSÉQUR Express code — and handles the identity and authority checks the registry requires.

§ What Is a Company Key

It's a registry access code — not a password you can reset yourself.

Every corporation in Canada is tied to a unique access code issued by the registry it was incorporated with. It is separate from your CRA My Business Account, your ONe‑key login, or any other government sign‑in. Corporations Canada issues a Corporation Key for federal corporations. Ontario issues a Company Key. British Columbia uses a Company Password. Quebec’s Registraire des entreprises works through a clicSÉQUR Express code. Without the right one, you can’t file an annual return, appoint or remove a director, or change your registered address online — even if you’re the sole shareholder.

These codes are issued once, usually by mail or email at incorporation or first login, and registries won’t simply resend them on request. They first need to confirm who you are and that you have authority to act for the corporation. That verification step is where most business owners stall — and it’s the part we take over.

§ The Recovery Sequence

From locked out to filing again, in four steps.

01

Tell Us Your Situation

Corporation name, jurisdiction, business number, and why you need the key reissued.

02

We Confirm Your Authority

We check that you’re a director, officer, or authorized signer entitled to receive the code.

03

We Contact the Registry

We submit the reissue or reset request directly to the correct federal or provincial registry.

04

You Receive Your Key

Your key, password, or access code is issued and you can file online again.

§ WHY KEYS GO MISSING

Most people don't lose the key. They never had it.

Company keys are issued once, often to whoever handled the incorporation, and then not needed again until the first annual return comes due. By that point the letter, the email, or the person who received it is long gone. These are the situations we see most often.

Incorporated through someone else

A lawyer, accountant, or online service completed the incorporation and the access code went to their address or inbox, not yours.

The notice was never opened

Registry mail arrives once, looks like routine paperwork, and gets filed away or discarded before anyone knows what it is.

Ownership or officers changed

The corporation was bought, inherited, or restructured, and the code stayed with a former director or business partner.

First filing, years later

Nothing was needed until an annual return, a director change, or a lender request forced the first online filing.

§ Why It Matters

A missing key doesn't just lock a login — it stalls your compliance.

01 · Missed Filings
Dissolution Risk

Annual returns have deadlines. Director changes have filing windows. If you can’t access the registry, those obligations don’t pause — they accumulate. A corporation that falls behind on its annual returns can eventually be dissolved by the registry, and reviving it costs far more time and money than reissuing a key.

02 · Verified Recovery
Same-Week Access
We confirm your authority over the corporation and request reissue directly from the registry — most keys are back in your hands within days.
03 · Director Changes

Blocked without it

Adding or removing a director or officer requires the key — updates can’t be filed online otherwise.

04 · Sold or Inherited

Common for buyers

Bought a company or took over one from a partner? The previous key rarely comes with it — we reissue a fresh one under your name.
05 · One-Time Only

Reused going forward

Once reissued, the same key covers every future filing — store it safely and you won’t need us again.

§ Common questions

Company key questions, answered.

A company key is a unique access code your corporate registry issues so you can file corporate documents online. Corporations Canada calls it a Corporation Key, Ontario calls it a Company Key, British Columbia uses a company password, and Quebec uses a clicSÉQUR Express code. It’s separate from your CRA or government sign‑in credentials.

You need it to file your annual return, add or remove directors, update your registered office address, and make other changes to your corporate record through the registry’s online system.

Yes. Registries can issue a replacement code once they confirm your identity and your authority to act for the corporation. We prepare and submit that request for you.

No. Your business number identifies your corporation with the CRA. Your CRA My Business Account login is for tax filings. A company key is issued by the corporate registry and only controls access to corporate filings.

Not the way you’d reset a password. Registries don’t email a replacement on request — they require verification that you’re a director, officer, or authorized representative before reissuing the code.

Generally a director, officer, or someone authorized to act for the corporation. Registry requirements vary by jurisdiction, and we’ll tell you what applies to yours before we start.

It depends on the registry and how quickly the verification information is provided. We submit the request as soon as your details are confirmed and keep you updated until the code is issued.

Once the change in directors or officers is properly recorded, a new key can be requested. If the registry record is out of date, we’ll tell you what needs to be filed first.

Missed annual returns put your corporation offside with the registry. Over time this can lead to dissolution, which is more expensive and slower to fix than recovering your access code.
